Lacan formulates it in his The Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis1: “What is realized in my history is neither the past definite as what was, since it is no more, nor even the perfect as what has been in what I am, but the future anterior as what I will have been, given what I am in the process of becoming”. In the erotics of time, it is not about acceleration or perfect synchrony, but the necessary time for a word to produce its consequences.

The School was born from a call to resolute workers: an ethical resolution to sustain the formation and to ensure the reconquest of the Freudian field. That orientation finds in work transference the cause of a one-to-one transmission, which we seek to verify at the very heart of every end of analysis.

But the pass introduces a displacement. The end of analysis does not consolidate a collective identification; it produces what Lacan calls the scattered, ill-assorted individuals. The fall of identifications does not extinguish the work; it modifies its cause. The transference is no longer only sustained by the love of knowledge, but rather by the singular real that each pass teaching introduces into the School.

Thescattered, ill-assorted individuals, alone with regard to any totality, yet resolute in revitalizing the work of the School, do not succeed the resolute workers, but reveal what this resolution implies from the start.

Thus, rather than inheriting a past, they are building [a(r)man] the present.

* Translated from Spanish by Renata Teixeira
* Proofread by Philip Dravers

1 Lacan, Jacques. “The Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis.” Écrits: The First Complete Edition in English.
